چکیده

This paper addresses the issue of homogenization of linear divergence form parabolic operators in situations where no ergodicity and no scale separation in time or space are available. Namely, we consider divergence form linear parabolic operators in Ω ⊂ R with L∞(Ω × (0, T ))-coefficients. It appears that the inverse operator maps the unit ball of L2(Ω× (0, T )) into a space of functions which at small (time and space) scales are close in H1norm to a functional space of dimension n. It follows that once one has solved these equations at least n-times it is possible to homogenize them both in space and in time, reducing the number of operations counts necessary to obtain further solutions. In practice we show that under a Cordes type condition that the first order time derivatives and second order space derivatives of the solution of these operators with respect to harmonic coordinates are in L2 (instead of H−1 with Euclidean coordinates). If the medium is time independent then it is sufficient to solve n times the associated elliptic equation in order to homogenize the parabolic equation. AMS 1991 Subject Classification. A Generalized Space-Time Mathematical Homogenization Theory for Bridging Atomistic and Continuum Scales

A generalized space-time mathematical homogenization theory, which constructs an equivalent continuum description directly from molecular dynamics (MD) equations, is developed. The noteworthy theoretical findings of this work are: (i) the coarse scale continuum equations (PDEs) obtained from the homogenization of MD equations are identical to those obtained from the classical homogenization of ...

Parameter determination in a parabolic inverse problem in general dimensions

It is well known that the parabolic partial differential equations in two or more space dimensions with overspecified boundary data, feature in the mathematical modeling of many phenomena. In this article, an inverse problem of determining an unknown time-dependent source term of a parabolic equation in general dimensions is considered. Employing some transformations, we change the inverse prob...

Multiscale problems and homogenization for second-order Hamilton–Jacobi equations

We prove a general convergence result for singular perturbations with an arbitrary number of scales of fully nonlinear degenerate parabolic PDEs. As a special case we cover the iterated homogenization for such equations with oscillating initial data. Explicit examples, among others, are the two-scale homogenization of quasilinear equations driven by a general hypoelliptic operator and the n-sca...

Correctors for the Homogenization of Monotone Parabolic Operators

In the homogenization of monotone parabolic partial differential equations with oscillations in both the space and time variables the gradients converges only weakly in L p. In the present paper we construct a family of correctors, such that, up to a remainder which converges to zero strongly in L p , we obtain strong convergence of the gradients in L p .

Space-time radial basis function collocation method for one-dimensional advection-diffusion problem

The parabolic partial differential equation arises in many application of technologies. In this paper, we propose an approximate method for solution of the heat and advection-diffusion equations using Laguerre-Gaussians radial basis functions (LG-RBFs). The results of numerical experiments are compared with the other radial basis functions and the results of other schemes to confirm the validit...
